GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Assists in performing paralegal work, preparing simple legal documents, and performing legal research not requiring professional legal competence; performs related duties as required.

COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES
Under direct supervision, the duties require the use of judgment in the application of knowledge of laws, regulations, and departmental practices in performing assignments in support of attorneys.

TYPICAL DUTIES
* 1. Assists in interviewing, investigating, conferring with, and taking written statements from complainants, potential witnesses, and defendants in prospective criminal or civil actions.
* 2. Disseminates documents, motions, subpoenas, court orders, etc.
* 3. Assists in the review of case profiles and in making initial determination of potential violations of laws, and assists in researching pertinent legal points.
* 4. Assists in screening noncriminal complaints, i.e., consumer complaints, and directs complaints to appropriate governmental and/or private agencies.
  5. Arranges and drafts compromises and cease and desist agreements between complainants and defendants.
  6. Arranges for, and conducts, follow-up investigations.
  7. Participates in legal research pertinent to special departmental programs or proposals, and in preparation of cases for trial.

1. Knowledge of the American legal system and sources of the law.
2. Knowledge of legal documents pertinent to lawsuits.
3. Ability to interpret and apply departmental policies and procedures.
4. Ability to interview and evaluate information from prospective complainants, witnesses, and defendants.
5. Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing.
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and clients.
7. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university, including or supplemented by a degree or certificate as legal or lawyer's assistant recognized by the American Bar Association or the American Association for Paralegal Education.

NOTE: One year of satisfactory experience performing legal research for an attorney may be substituted for the certificate as legal or lawyer's assistant recognized by the American Bar Association or the American Association for Paralegal Education.

SALARY
Starting salary is $38,920
Salary after 1 year is $54,889
